this might be the smallest post of all time. it feels so naked without a stupid picture of movie. I must fix this.

Bigworm on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 1:50 PM

Coach Cal thinks their youth is an asset. After beating MSU in the SEC Championship game he was talking about their will to win. He says with a veteran team after Johnson hitting that triple to go up by 5 with 2 minutes remaining might think the door is shut and you can't open it up. He said with our youth they come to she shut door and try to jump over it, well you can't do that, so they try to climb under it, well you can't do that so more so than not they just lower their shoulders and run right through it.

Brock on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 2:58 PM

Adrian, you are full of shit. I guarantee every Pac-10 team loses in the first round, and don't be surprised if 6-7 Big East Teams make the sweet 16.

The wild card is the Big 10. I can't figure out if many teams from there will make a deep run. Michigan State and Wisconsin always seem to make it pretty far, but which one is a tough call this year. Ohio State could run to the finals or lose in round 2.

My sleeper is Baylor. Their bracket is favorable for a nice little run.

Bigworm on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 3:53 PM

Brock is that your sleeper or Bilas's?

I know I have seen a couple people predict Baylor-Duke to be going at it in the South.

Bigworm on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 3:57 PM

Philco - that shirt is great.

AJ did bring a tear to my eye this morning. As I was getting him dressed today I asked him if he wanted to watch Mickey Mouse to which he replied "I want to watch basketball". Thank God for ESPN2.

Brock on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 5:54 PM

Did Bilas pick them? I didn't watch any of the ESPN Bracket shows, I was too busy watching the NIT selection show. Go Bearcats! 66th best team in the country!

Phil on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 7:43 PM

i added a video to spruce up the content

Bigworm on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 9:53 PM

May not have been Bilas - but I know several analysts have.

Phil on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 3:32 PM

from the funbag (http://deadspin.com/5494718/ghosts-...and-cancer-porn):

Quetzal:
I hate restaurants that cut their pizzas into grids rather than slices. One of the beauties of pizza is that each serving has its own little handle. When Descartes cuts my pizza, I can't eat any of the internal, crustless pieces without making a mess of myself. On a related note, one of the best parts of having small children around is that they "hate the crust" and always leave some of the choicest bites right at the edge of the slice for me to finish.

---------------

Agreed. I prefer triangle slice to squares in all pizza-related matters. Triangle slices also allow for proper folding. I have been known to take middle slice of a square pizza and simply place them upside down on an edge piece, and then eat it as a double slice.

I have a one-year-old, and the kid loves gnawing on pizza crust. So my wife will ask me to save my pizza crust for him, and that completely fucks me up. I'm not supposed to give up my crust. I'm supposed to be a fucking crust landfill. That's the plus of being a dad. I get all the sandwich and pizza crusts and bread heels. WHO THE FUCK DOES THIS LITTLE BOY THINK HE IS?

Bigworm on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 4:29 PM

I concur with the last one. AJ will snatch my crust from time to time.

Phil on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 4:36 PM

i posted that because at bearnos we'll request it cut into squares so that we'll have corner pieces.

Corner pieces are so good, but I do see the flaws in our logic because middle pieces are so shitty.

Bigworm on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 4:38 PM

yeah the middle pieces suck. If you are lucky, you can get the few pieces that have the triangular crust piece.

Brent on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 4:54 PM

Hence the corners, yeah but in a large there are only four pieces that are without the crust, so this maximizes the crust on the # of slices in case you have someone who does not like the crust. Like Tiffany, for example, who just uses the crust as a tool. However, Tiffany is not the best example because she would omit from eating the center pieces instead greedily grab a crust slice only to throw it away. I mean, personally, i think that is at the very least a corporal offense, I mean, if you don't like the crust, i hear you, but at least leave it for the people who do, eat the middle for chrissakes. Speaking of Tiffany, is Brody dead?

Buy a house in the Graymoor-Devondate neighborhood. I know of at least 2 houses on my parents' street that are for sale from old people croaking. However, you might get in a bidding war with families trying to live within 100 yards of a school.

I'm pretty sure I sent out a random set of text messages tonight. I would apologize, but I'm sure that none of you are women, so just take it like a dude.

Bigworm on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 9:47 AM

Found this on the Courier-Journal.

John Wall vs. Jesus
Years ago after Michael Jordan's 63-point work day against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Playoffs legendary C's forward Larry Bird said this: "He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today. I think it's just God disguised as Michael Jordan."
So since everyone is treating this John Wall kid like he's the second coming I thought it'd be fun, on the eve of the NCAA Tournament, to pit J.W. against J.C. (aka Jesus Christ) in a game of imaginary one-on-one.
Here's a quick look at the scouting report on each:
John Wall: unbelievable quickness and athletic ability...gets in the lane faster than you can say a Hail Mary...drops dimes like nobody's business...solid defensive player...lay off and let him shoot from the outside...force him to his left hand.
J.C.: deceptive quickness...high riser...deft shooter...great teammate, makes those around him better...loves to take sacrifice himself for the team, leads in charges taken...only way to beat him is to get him in foul trouble.
The game (24-by-4): Wall would jump out early (8-2), it's hard to prepare for his quickness. But J.C. starts to play off Wall and he misses a couple jumpers in a row. J.C., meanwhile, is money. He knocks down a couple of threes before Wall starts to honor his shot. That's when J.C. goes to the drive. After a dunk gives him a 20-14 lead J.C. does the unthinkable...The Shizz. Wall, inspired by God's son doing his dance, rallies. He beats J.C. on a crossover, a floater in the lane then drops in a rainbow three to go up 21-20. Could he do it? Could he pull off the biggest upset since Villanova over Georgetown in the '85 final?
C'mon, who do you think helped the Wildcats make all those shots? J.C.'s dad of course. He's watching here too. When Wall beats J.C. on another crossover and goes in for an uncontested layup a giant wind comes from nowhere and turns the shot away. J.C. grabs it, a la Reggie Miller against the Knicks, turns and knocks down a three. Wall can see the writing on the...well..on the wall. He jumps out on J.C. to take away the shot. J.C. drives past him, but Wall recovers. J.C. stops and shot fakes, though. Wall goes for it and for a second he is blinded by J.C.'s flowing hair. Nothing but net. Debate over...for now. J.C. promises a rematch if Wall brings Kentucky an eighth national championship.

douglas on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 10:20 AM

that's an interesting story, but unfortunately has no basis in reality, for we all know that wall and j.c. are one and the same, only in different forms. god sent his son in the form of wall to be the savior for UK basketball.

Bigworm on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 10:24 AM

The morning after St. Patty's should be a national late start day.

Seriously Wes, you ask that question? Especially posed by Phil.

douglas on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1:44 PM

joe on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1:46 PM

A UK fan picking an SEC school...crazy.

douglas on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1:49 PM

that's not it, i think it was just one of those games where absolutely no one had FL winning. if it's too trendy, i try to stay away. kinda like siena over purdue, absolutely everyone had that pick as an upset, same w/ cornell. i don't think i gave too much love to UT and Vandy, those two schools especially tend to flame out in the tourney

georgetown when monroe is playing well (which he has of late) is very, very, very good

Nova did for the first 20 games of the season. G-Town when they kicked the shit out of Duke. Marquette is just Marquette

gtown can be very good, they can also be gtown, which means ball hogging and bad shots. nova did look shitty first round last year and went on a final four run, so who knows with them. they could potentially get a cakewalk to the elite eight if baylor loses

adrian on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 4:29 PM

Baylor has me scratching my head right now. I don't know if it wad smart to put them to the elite eight.

Phil on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 5:06 PM

dude on my hockey team got pretty jacked up. here's what's happening to him:
Okay, so the doctor said that I have a torn labrum, which supposedly happens pretty much every time someone my age dislocates their shoulder. However, I also tore the ligament that covers it. These two things they will fix with arthroscopic surgery next Wednesday. Only about an hour and a half procedure. The bad part however is the dent in my shoulder bone that occurred when it came out. This makes it much easier for it to re-dislocate.The only way to fix this I believe is to have a procedure that adds bone material or something similar to it. But that is a major surgery and they won't be doing that.

So the plan for now is for them to do the arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday, which will repair and tighten the labrum and the ligament. Then we'll see how it does from there and if the dent is going to be an issue or not. They told me probably a couple of months off of work and probably 3 or 4 months before I can return to sports.

Bigworm on Friday, March 19, 2010 at 8:21 AM

This morning on Sportcenter they are talking about the Big East and how they have basically laid an egg so far. Their only win being a #2 vs. a #15 and requiring OT to do that.

They did make the comment that the Big East has never lost 4 games in the opening round...........time will tell.

adrian on Friday, March 19, 2010 at 9:15 AM

Pitt will get throttled today. Cuse and WV should not have a problem. Not much to say about the Tards

Bigworm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Sorry Brent it wasn't a mock draft, it was a quote from Larry Vaught.

"Sat with a NBA executive as well as Will Purdue on my way back from New Orleans today.
NBA exec said five Cats would go in first round of draft if held today and Patterson would likely be the last one taken. Orton and Bledsoe have impressed him that much.
Purdue, who did the New Orleans games for Westwood Radio, really liked Orton and Bledsoe as well. He says Orton has great upside that a NBA team won't be able to pass on.
Both also said no team, including Kansas, could match UK's talent."

douglas on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 11:34 AM

i've seen that about orton, he's a 6'10" big man with a decent mid range jumper and has developed his post moves a lot this year. the knock on him at the beginning of the year was he wasn't as smooth as cousins. he's shown in the last month that's not much of a concern anymore. if he stays he's one of the top 2 or 3 big men in the country easy, potential all american, and pretty much guaranteed lottery pick. he's one of those guys that should probably stay in school another year to help his draft standing, but b/c of the potential NBA lockout and the possibility that all NBA rookie contracts will be substantially lower than they are now, he could bolt early to avoid that. bledsoe's in the same boat. people are already sleeping on UK next year, but if orton/bledsoe stay, and they get the kind of recruiting class that it's appearing they're going to get (kanter and knight are pretty much wrapped up) then they're going to be damn good next year too

Phil on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 11:36 AM

I like Orton. Him and Cousins are gonna be excellent pros.

They love him. I actually think it's possible (not likely, but possible) that Kentucky has 5 players in the lottery. Orton is the rawest of the bunch, but he's big, physical, plays defense and isn't afraid to mix it up under the basket. I just had a GM in the lottery tell me they liked him more than Cole Aldrich. I have him at No. 27 on our Big Board, but I'm getting the feeling that I've got him about 10 to 15 spots too low.

douglas on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 3:43 PM

to answer your question brock, enes kanter is a five star center who originally committed to washington and by all accounts is going to UK. brandon knight is the consensus top recruit in the class and has UK in his top 4, but once again, everyone pretty much already has UK penciled in. The best point guard in the class goes to calipari by default. after those two, doron lamb and josh selby are possibilities, terrance ross and terrance jones are as well, i believe all are five stars. there's also cj leslie, who plays at the same high school as john wall and is good buddies with him, also a stud, and some other kid who's a 4 star, can't remember his name, who is leaning UK apparently. they've already signed stacey poole, a top 25 recruit. there's like 4 uncommitted mcdonald's all americans, 3 of which are UK leans, knight, lamb, and someone else

Bigworm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 3:49 PM

Bigworm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 4:12 PM

Here is the scout article.

Enes Kanter ended his recruitment on Tuesday. The former international star gave a pledge to a SEC program just two weeks after visiting.

Enes Kanter has come to a college decision.

After taking an official visit to Kentucky two weeks ago and taking in their senior day festivities, Kanter, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound Switzerland native, gave John Calipari and his staff a verbal commitment.

When asked why he went with Kentucky, Kanter’s response was simple.

“Because of John Calipari,” Kanter said. “He’s a good coach. I like the way he plays. I like the freedom.”

Shortly following his trip to Ketnucky, Calipari made a trip to the west coast to see him play and that was a big deal to Kanter. He also got to know assistant coach Orlando Antigua well and they played into his decision-making.

“He’s a good guy,” Kanter said. “I like Orlando a lot. I feel comfortable with them. He sees me as a good player. I liked the fact that there are a lot of ex-players on staff.”

In late November, Kanter gave Washington a verbal commitment, but in mid-February the five-star prospect reopened his commitment and Kentucky was among the programs that jumped right in the picture.

“I had a really good time [on my visit],” Kanter said. “I liked it. I really liked the tutors and the academic center. I like the program and the tradition.

Kanter arrived in the United States in mid-August, after turning down a pair of multi-year deals. Olympiacos offered him $2 million per year for two seasons while a team in Turkey threw a five-year, $6 million dollar deal his way.

“I came here because it’s a bigger arena,” Kanter told Scout.com following a workout in August. “I think I accomplished all I could in Europe. I didn’t want to turn pro at 17. I wanted to come here and experience the NCAA and I believe I can play in the NBA.”

Kanter, whose father is a doctor in the medical field, made national headlines when he opted to leave Turkey. In fact, Draft Express President Jonathan Givony told us at that time the story was monumental internationally as well.

“Him coming over here is a big deal,” Givony said in August. “NCAA basketball has taken a huge hit in the eyes of Europeans because so many guys have fallen on their face. The fact that he’s coming over here is a major, major story.”

The Turkish star ended up at Simi Valley (Calif.) Stoneridge Prep and put together an impressive senior season. Known for his rebounding and physical play, the talented big man went toe-to-toe with some of the nations best.

Last week, Kanter matched up with Tristan Thompson and Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep. In the match up Kanter went for 24 points and 18 rebounds in a one-point loss to one of the best high school programs in the nation.

Kanter is Calipari’s second verbal commitment in the 2010 class. He joins Jacksonville (Fla.) Providence standout Stacey Poole.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 10:49 AM

Phil - Evan Daniels, the Scout writer that broke the news has had a couple conversations on the UK site mainly because I keep asking him about it. Basically, Kanter played on some pro teams in Europe but did not get paid for it. So he will probably have to sit similar to the Kiclicijckci (however you spell his name) dude for West Virginia. Other people have suspected that Kanter is just driving up his price for Euro teams.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 10:51 AM

knight and selby are pretty consensus top two PGs so it has been assumed they wouldn't go together, UK would get one or the other, so I'm not banking on him. i think selby's looking at uconn and kansas mainly. i don't know if leslie's a longshot or not, i know UK's in his final 2 i think, with nc state being one of the other schools.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 10:52 AM

Selby is explosive, I'd like to get him and Knight...but it isn't going to happen.

Phil on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:05 AM

yeah, shelby and knight will not be at the same school so shelby is out.

Jones and Ross are being recruited as a package deal, so that is pushing Leslie out

Phil on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:13 AM

There's a difference between him and Kilicli in terms of talent and politics.
UK is taking a big risk that one of the star players for one of the richests Euro league teams really did not get paid, and that the enemies this star player made by leaving (not to mention his father not being well liked) won't come back to haunt him.

I think it's a very, very weird recruit for Cal to being going after. Of course, Sandy Bell is a magic worker.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:25 AM

Of course, his father is a doctor so I am guessing he comes from a background with some cash.

douglas on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:29 AM

if jamaal magloire can come back after declaring for the draft and not getting picked, then UK can have a big enes on their roster

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:40 AM

Magloire or Morris?

Enes Kanter vid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b-Tlu47Ihs

Evan Daniels says that Enes is as good as a rebounder as Cousins is but not as good as a scorer. Works for me.

douglas on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:41 AM

that's right it was morris, wrong M

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:41 AM

He has some skills but I do not think he is the next Cousins.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11:47 AM

I sure hope Orton and Bledsoe stick around next year.

Wouldn't surprise me if all 4 freshman that play left. And Hood could transfer for all we know.

Brent on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 12:16 PM

I would put money on that Orton isnt going anywhere...one NBA guy says something and it gets blown out of proportion....Orton is not leaving, his game is not even close to being ready and a lottery pick, that's just ridiculous.

Phil on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 12:38 PM

The thing about the draft this season is that with the new CBA a second round pick is going to worth the same as a 15th overall pick this season. That's why you'll see chumps like Retardo Samuels putting his name in just in case.

If Orton doesn't try the draft he's an idiot, but as Douglas said it's not like UK is gonna have any problems getting him eligible enough if that doesn't work out. Might want Sandy Bell to also confiscate his cell phone though...

douglas on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 12:58 PM

as long as the ol' fax machine is working UK will be alright. and with orton, it's not about him being ready right now, it's his potential. he's already shown tremendous improvement this year, and he's nowhere near done yet. he's a 6'10" big guy with a lot of bulk and strength and is showing more finesse and better range everyday. he's the kind of player NBA teams get hard thinking about stealing in the draft under the radar and molding him themselves

Phil on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 1:14 PM

all you got to do it take a look at tommy mason-griffin who is declaring today and it's clear this is going to be a class stacked with people leaving early. "its a official dat i am leavin skool....ask me y i aint doin anotha yr yue mite get ignored."

as deadspin said, yeah I think he's gotten all he can from higher education

Phil on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 1:15 PM

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 2:58 PM

Brent - I guarantee you, if Orton leaves he is a lottery pick.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 2:59 PM

NBA teams will take Orton because he isn't afraid to mix it up down low and is already a tremendous defender.

Brent on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 8:20 AM

If Orton is guaranteed a lottery pick, he won't stay. So let's make a friendly wager $1, if he leaves you win, if he stays I win (and you win as a UK fan).

shit my dad says: the tv show
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr...08d22de777c4c27

Bigworm on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 10:00 AM

Brent - Not true. There is a big difference in money if you go in the top 10 vs. top 15 especially over the course of the three year guaranteed contract. Also, I think if UK wins the title this year all 4 freshman are gone, if not, some may return.

If he stays in school one more year he could make a lot more money coming out that next year. Of course, with a potential NBA lockout in the near future it might be wise to go ahead and enter the draft this year.

But if you want to wager a $1 you are on.

Joe - Everything I report is from the message boards or from side conversations that I have had with a reputable source who directly speaks to player's families. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong....shit happens.

Phil on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 10:26 AM

Players drafted in 2010 will enter under the current CBA. There will be a new one next year with far less lucrative pay scales for rookies. In fact, a #15 pick, if not #32 pick, this season will VERY likely get a salary worth quite a bit more than a #10 pick in 2011.

douglas on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 10:33 AM

i like this line in eric crawford's story about the cornell / UK storyline:

And second, barring a surprise essay test at halftime, the Hollywood upset isn't happening. Because while — as Cornell so well illustrates and the NCAA loves to point out — there are thousands of college athletes who will go pro in something other than sports, none of them start for the UK basketball team.

Bigworm on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 7:20 PM

I enjoyed this comment from a UK fan in Syracuse.

5:18 P.M. Cornell fans are now, oficially, multinefarious, as I've just seen my second. He's wearing a hockey jersey. A hockey jersey. These are people that obviously have no idea what a basketball is. They don't deserve to know the joy of victory.

Bigworm on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 7:21 PM

And again.

6:31 P.M. Back in the hotel room to charge the phone. Will need all the power possible to type the horror of the upcoming WVU/UW game. WVU fans are tacky, and vulgar, and they all smell of commonness. I'm not a snob. By no means. But WVU fans take the cake. And by cake, I mean prize for being the ugliest of ugly Americans. I've seen some UK fans dressed in UK jumpers, as if, in case UK were to run out players, Calipari could point to the stands and say "Dude! Your in for Miller." And the guy could strip his running clothes, sprint down the aisle, and jump into the game. All 5'8", 234 pound, cigarette smoking, giant bucket of magnificence that he is. But, having said that, he's nothing compared to WVU fans. They make me want to puke.

Bigworm on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 7:24 PM

Here is another blurb from the guy with these postings.

I got 5th row, center court. I bought them from a Syracuse fan. I paid 10x face value. Stub Hub. He will have a tidy vacation on my dime this summer. Allegiance and principle be damned.

Bigworm on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 7:25 PM

Damn me for reading his comments backwards.

2:59 P.M. I'm taking a brief respite to charge my phone and computer so that I can maintain contact with the civilized world.

A little about Syracuse the campus. Its awful. If Cleveland threw up on a pile of Milwaukee crap, then you'd begin to approach the hideousness of the buildings. Its a hodgepodge of midcentury, eastern block, poured concrete architecture mixed in with liberal doses of ham-handed, milquetoast modernism.

Now, I may be unfairly influenced by the utter repugnance of the climate and weather, and if I am, then so be it. If it were 80 degrees with tropical breezes, it would suck less. Which is like saying a mustache ride from Bea Arthur is preferable to one from your mother.

But, the people are nice.

1996 Cats.

So the word on the street is we had an all Big East officiating crew last night. We were jobbed so bad it wasn't even funny.

Since UK and WV are playing in Syracuse, where will the officiating crew come from? God knows if we get those ass clowns again UK won't survive.

Yeah even Bilas was riled up on that one.

Bigworm on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 11:05 AM

joe's arguement on the 2010 team vs '96 team.

The 2010 team was only able to score 61 points against an ivy league team. The 96 team would have scored 120

adrian on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 12:57 PM

Phil speaking for Joe:

Everyone has bad games.

douglas on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 1:16 PM

you can't make any comparisons to '96 until a championship has been won. once it's been won, I'll debate the pros and cons from each team thoroughly, but until the 2010 team wins the title, '96 team beats '10 by default.

douglas on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 1:21 PM

and to f/u on adrian's post, that second half by UK was absolutely fucking atrocious offensive basketball until the last several minutes. that's pretty much the worst they can play offensively. the difference between this game and the losses they had in the season was defense they played. UK won't play that bad offensively every game, but if they play defense like they did yesterday and throughout this tournament, WVU sure as hell ain't beating them, duke's not athletic enough to do much against it. evan turner might do some damage, but the rest of his team won't. with as bad as their offense and shooting was, they still won by 17.

Bigworm on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 1:39 PM

as for UK, they picked a helluva time to play worse than they did against cornell and south carolina. all year their biggest threat was themselves, which proved to be true. they deserved to lose. at least we're back, much happier with a loss in the elite eight than in the NIT. and they'll be pretty damn good next year too

Wall and Cousins named AP All-Americans first team.

Bigworm on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 12:57 PM

And Brandon Knight is suppose to announce on April 14th....I guess we will know the fate of the UK team departures by that date.

douglas on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 1:03 PM

or least know who's going to declare w/o an agent

Phil on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Knight is 100% going to UK. It's been a done deal for a while. Apparently it's causing drama because he's going to a Nike school.

I think the real litmus test is Leslie. He's apparently a 100% mental case. Schools are pulling out left and right and right now UK is not interested in him. If they get back in the race, then I think it's a clear sign they are going to be in desperate need to restock. I think them already taking a chance on Big Enes shows they might be thinking they'll be losing quite a bit after this season.

douglas on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 1:55 PM

one thing people forget about is the seniors too. we're losing perry and ramon, obviously not great players but decent role players, krebs, ppat, wall, cousins, that's six already w/o talking about bledsoe or orton, plus rumor of a possible transfer (probably hood). they've only got two signees so far, so at a minimum they have 4 open scholarships. hadn't heard that about leslie but i don't keep up with recruiting that much

Bigworm on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 2:34 PM

Doron Lamb is a pretty high target as well, and I have heard that Terrance Jones is the big that is built for Dribble Drive (just for you Joe).

Phil on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 2:40 PM

there were tons of rumors of Hood going to WKU. Calipari never liked the guy, but knew better not to include him in his list of purges from the team at the beginning of the season with him being the great white kentucky basketball player. I can't imagine him sticking around even if Cal is desperate enough to give him minutes next season

Jones along with Ross are very likely to sign.

Bigworm on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 2:57 PM

Phil - I don't think it is a matter of liking Hood or not or just being honest with the kid about if he has a future at UK. Certain people just can't play a certain way. Hood isn't that great at defense which is going to be a staple for Cal. If he wants to play big minutes, he should probably transfer elsewhere.

I like the kid and think he could be a solid contributor as a junior/senior but he does have his limitations.

douglas on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 3:06 PM

he'll never get much PT at UK, he's just too slow and not a good enough ball handler for cal's offense. other than maybe hitting the floor in a slightly higher reserve role as a senior sharpshooter, he's a waste of a scholarship. he'd be a welcome addition at wku

Phil on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 3:09 PM

Cal ran off all the players that were recruited to play at UK that didn't fit his system, which is probably smart. He knew that he could get away with a lot, but in no way could he do that to a white Mr. Basketball in Kentucky - he had to hope the kid transferred. Looks like he'll get his wish.

Bigworm on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 3:10 PM

Yeah, not to mention he is 6'6" and 180 pounds holding a 50 pound weight.

That dude makes Adrian's legs look big.

Bigworm on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 3:42 PM

Something I found interesting on the boards today. Brent I may owe you a buck yet.

"There is a lot of chatter that the potential 2011 NBA lockout will open the floodgates for potential early
entry players this spring. This helps UK, IMO, as it pushes Orton further down the list. It also could keep
a Knight or Jones (if UK is fortunate enough to sign either) in school another year.

There is talk here in BHam from a person who would know that Bledsoe is leaning heavily toward the
draft...be it 1st round, 2nd round, etc. Eric will not be able to handle Wall/Cousins making all the money,
and him staying behind. The quicker we find out the final decision, the better. The mock drafts mean
little to Eric, IMO."

adrian on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 11:40 AM

Tonight at eight on espn is the highschool allstar game. Barnes And Leslie will match up against each other. Also all the other top talent will be playing.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 11:41 AM

Harrison Barnes is a freaking stud. I wish UK had inked that one.

douglas on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 11:55 AM

all of those recruits were saying that UK were going to have 5 leave early, including bledsoe and orton, sounded like they knew more than we do

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:17 PM

I believe most will comment and sign before the name withdrawal occurs.

Would be nice for Orton to stay but if he does I am sure Jones and Leslie would look elsewhere.

Phil on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:22 PM

Jones will likely sign regardless of Orton, and Ross along with him - I think they are some sort of package deal.

Leslie is 99.99% out. If they sign him, they are very desperate. Total headcase and a liability on and off the court apparently.

adrian on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:34 PM

Phil

who was/is more fucked up. Lance Stephenson or Leslie?

adrian on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:40 PM

Brent where do we pick up our bib's for the race Saturday ?

Brent on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:47 PM

Papa Johns stadium, at the Brown-Foreman area up top

Phil on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 1:06 PM

Stephenson was more of an academic problem than anything else. Most shied away from him because they doubted he could go eligible. Of course, they assumed he'd be another primadona and all that so it was a double whammy that kept him from getting signed until so late.

Leslie is interesting. After pulling out from NC State schools have been backing off of him like crazy after he visits. And honestly I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up going back to NC State in the long run.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 1:39 PM

If CJ Leslie wants to come to UK they will take him not out of desperation but because he is very talented. He is the #3 ranked PF and from the videos I have seen of him, probably the most athletic PF in the country.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 1:41 PM

He could be a total nut case, I certainly don't know the young man....but a lot of people said Cousins was too and that turned out pretty well.

Phil on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 1:53 PM

i'm just saying UK is getting cold on the guy. I don't think they want him.

I mean, just look at the midnight madness fiasco. He got spurned by UNC, made it look like he was going to sign at midnight madness with UK that week and then decided on his way to Kentucky he instead decided to stop in Georgia and party with his buddies instead? Riiiiight.

#3 PF or not, there's a definite reason no one has signed the kid yet.

Bigworm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 2:02 PM

Yeah UK hasn't been "showing him the love" that NC State and Florida has recently.

Terrance Jones is their top priority at PF.

With that being said, look for a transfer to come from the UK program (somebody not named Hood).

douglas on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 3:40 PM

time for that "UK doesn't rebuild, it reloads" thing to come into play...

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 10:15 AM

btw, I'm hearing Cal is pushing Orton out. Hood seems likely to stay know.

Poole, Kanter, Jones, Knight and potentially Ross will have plenty of playing time.

douglas on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 10:20 AM

where you hearing that? i thought only wes has Uk sources

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 10:35 AM

Some comes from some media people, but really there are four Louisville message board posters connected to places like Central Bank or are friends with guys on the board at UK. I probably know more "insider" info on UK than I do on Louisville simply because the noise ratio is so much lower.

If these guys said it, it's almost 100% true, but most of this stuff is so fluid who knows.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 11:21 AM

Cal is not pushing Orton out, but if Orton has the chance to live his NBA dream Cal will encourage him to go.

Orton's father was told that if he had a good workout, he could potentially shoot up to a top 5 pick. WTF?

douglas on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 11:27 AM

orton has a lot of potential, but i'm not sure it's quite that much. i just can't believe orton's getting pushed out, he's said way too many nice things about cal and playing for him for me to think there's some kind of drama behind the scenes. i just think it has more to do with the potential lockout than anything, that cal knows if they have a decent shot at getting picked this year it's better for them to go now than next year. and make no mistake, recruits see that shit and like it, they see a coach who's helping his players make the pros. plus wall/cousins/bledsoe were all at the mcd's game last night courtside, you know they were doing cal's work for him

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 11:36 AM

Apparently Cal doesn't want Orton involved with the next incoming class and wants him out. Thinks he's a huge pain in the ass.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 11:46 AM

Could be a big pain in the ass, the kid is extremely smart.

I know Cal has said some things have gone on this year that won't go on next year.

At the same time if Orton is a big pain in the ass, what is his opinion of Leslie?

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 11:59 AM

based on the fact that he's shying away from leslie, I think Calipari might be reevaluating his taking anyone and everyone that is talented and throwing them into the mix and hoping for the best strategy

Brent on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 12:34 PM

I think the NBA if they don't do something soon will start to see their stock decline significantly. If I were David Stern, I would institute an age policy or something. The young players are killing the game. I was watching the 30 on 30 with Reggie Miller and forgot how exciting those games were. Now, players don't listen to the coach and sit on the bench, like Blatche the other night.

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 12:57 PM

so i went to arby's for lunch. They had me pull forward because something wasn't finished cooking. They hand me my bag and I head back into my office. No arby's sauce - APRIL FOOLS!

Little did those mother fuckers know that I've been stockpiling just in case of emergencies like these

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 1:10 PM

Btw, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it was Orton that is the problem, but in fact the father. The mere fact that Kentucky and his relationship caused a new NCAA rule to have to be created might be a good sign that Orton's father might have been pushing for more and more from Cal that Cal didn't feel comfortable with anymore.

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 1:11 PM

er "I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it wasn't Orton that is the problem, but in fact the father"

douglas on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 1:11 PM

what rule are you talking about?

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 1:15 PM

UK paid Orton's father to talk three different times at their basketball camps. There is a new NCAA rule (or at least a proposal) that prevents that loophole. I believe Orton's father was paid once by KU too during the recruiting process.

This was under Gillispie, not Cal, that Orton's dad was getting kick backs.

douglas on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 1:16 PM

oh yeah, i had forgotten all about that. and that does bug me to no end when parents are speaking for their kids at the college level. i fucking hate that, i would've hated my parents going to wiegandt in college demanding more PT or whatever.

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 1:20 PM

this would be more like Wiegandt having to pay your Dad $2500 three times to talk at a Bellarmine baseball camp so that you'd sign with Bellarmine.

Orton's dad's latest comments do make him look like a prima donna too, so there may be some truth in this.

Found the rule:
13.12.2.2.2 Employment as a Speaker in an Institutional Camp or Clinic—Basketball. An institution shall not employ (either on a salaried or a volunteer basis) a speaker in any basketball camp or clinic (including a coaches clinic or a camp or clinic involving nonprospects) who is involved in coaching prospective student-athletes or is associated with a prospective student-athlete as a result of the prospective student-athlete’s participation in basketball. Such an individual may be employed as a camp counselor, but may not perform speaking duties other than those normally associated with camp counselor duties (e.g.,
skill instruction). (Adopted: 1/17/09)

Bigworm on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:08 PM

*on my way home from WORK I stopped at Costco...

Bigworm on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:10 PM

My biggest problem with Orton at this moment is that it was said that he might be dropping his classes....if that is the case, we could lose a scholarship.

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:12 PM

Orton has dropped his classes, but merely because he would have failed them otherwise. By dropping them and entering the draft, his grades will still be in order if he comes back.

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:13 PM

it probably was felton spencer. he's still in town. He even substitute teaches I hear

Phil on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:14 PM

by failed them, I mean he's leaving school to work on getting ready for the draft. So he won't be going to class, so he's dropping them. I'm not sure that counts against Kentucky for those graduation rules if he does come back

douglas on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:14 PM

yeah, felton's a big dude, i used to see him around town from time to time. i used to see him around bardstown a lot

Bigworm on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:15 PM

Yeah that is what his father said, the big problem is if he doesn't finish them and he decides to come back then he won't be eligible the first part of the season I do believe.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 01, 2010 at 2:17 PM

If anybody is looking for a decent protein bar you can get the "Pure Protein" bars which has 20 grams of protein and only 17 or so carbs in them at Costco. I bought a pack of 18 (6 chocolate deluxe, 6 peanut butter, 6 chocolate chip) for only $17.99 at Costco. They are also only 180-200 calories.

Teague is making a decision soon. He is the top rated PG for 2011, watch this one closely.

douglas on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at 3:40 PM

he'll be at UL, pitino's contract was the teague extension

Bigworm on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at 3:48 PM

Not so fast my friend.....

douglas on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at 3:52 PM

i won't pretend to keep up as closely as you, but i'm not banking on him. i know like 3 of the top 5 players in that class are heavy UK leans though. quincy miller is always photographed with UK gear on and went to a couple games this year, and michael gilchrist has apparently stopped being recruited heavily.

Bigworm on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at 3:54 PM

I always figured he was a lock for UofL, no real surprise if he commits there.

douglas on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at 4:12 PM

sure you probably saw the same thing i did, but apparently he pushed back his decision date again, so maybe not as gung ho on UL as originally thought. i don't understand though why a stud recruit like him would make that decision a year early. so much can play out over a year and if you're one of the guys that can go pretty much wherever he wants, why wouldn't you wait until the end. not to mention the guys that wait the longest get the most publicity

Bigworm on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at 4:14 PM

Who knows? Maybe Cal just wants to lock him up early.

douglas on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at 4:42 PM

good article, it's written from the perspective of a disgruntled kansas fan, but it poses an interesting scenario about what would happen if college bball went to a smaller tournament, something kind of in the middle between the BCS system and the current 64 team format

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 10:59 AM

Yes I think they did, they hired somebody with a connection to him. Too close to call at this point, apparently, another university made up some ground with him.

more and more it looks like Teague to UK

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 2:54 PM

There is a rumor floating around that IU offered Shawn Teague (father/brother/family member?) a coaching position. I thought those things were no longer allowed by NCAA?

Phil on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 3:08 PM

IU would be shocking. It seems to be down between UK, Louisville and Cinci right now

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 3:50 PM

Xaiver Henry and Lance Stephenson announced they are going to put their name in the NBA Draft today. I would think that probably knocks Orton and Bledsoe down in the draft a notch or two.

douglas on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 4:06 PM

i doubt it, those were more likely to announce, plus they're different positions, those guys are forwards/slashers, orton's a true center, and bledsoe point guard

Phil on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 4:32 PM

i read rumors today of Durant being excited at the prospect of Orton getting drafted for his team. Those two are gone.

douglas on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 4:35 PM

Oklahoma city's his hometown team, larry orton apparently said the thunder would not let him fall out of the first round, they have two picks, the second around 20 or so

Brock on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 7:13 PM

With Stephenson declaring, I actually believe UC has a shot. Cronin notoriously cleans house right before signing new recruits. Happens every year. Not that Stephenson was pushed out by any means, but if Cronin knew there was a legit shot at Teague, I don't think he grovels too much to keep Stephenson from the draft.

If Cronin could coach 1/100th as well as he recruits, we'd be a top 5 program.

joe on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at 7:30 PM

douglas on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 8:44 AM

the only thing calipari's said about dodson is that he's on the team right now

douglas on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 8:45 AM

and patterson apparently hasn't officially submitted his papers for the draft yet, b/c he can't withdraw once he does. i still expect him to, but he's still apparently mulling it over

adrian on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 9:08 AM

Time to bring on knight, selby, lamb, jones and possibly Leslie

Bigworm on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 9:21 AM

I've heard that Cousins is the most likely to return. Apparently, there is a family feud going on.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 9:21 AM

I shouldn't say that, but some people aren't seeing eye to eye so to speak.

douglas on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 9:25 AM

what do you mean family feud? his own family or the "UK" family

Bigworm on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 10:20 AM

His own family.

Dad wants him to stay mom wants him to cash out early.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 10:24 AM

I think for the first time DC is finally out a place where nobody is latching onto him and he is enjoying his time. Hard decision for him. Even though he is skilled and can make some good bucks, I think another year for him to mature would be a good thing. His choice though, hard to turn down being a top 5 draft pick.

adrian on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 10:49 AM

If the NBA has a lockout. Do the players still get paid? How messed up would it be for all these players entering the draft and not get any cheddar.

douglas on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 11:00 AM

the key is signing a contract before any lockout and getting a signing bonus. they won't lose money or not get paid on any existing contracts, the lockout and any agreements made would fuck up any new contracts and put a cap on what rookies make

Jay on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 11:05 AM

I dont think they get paid, if there is a lockout, you just lose the money. It's kind of like going on strike.

douglas on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 1:42 PM

yeah, but if you have a signed contract before the lockout, that's the contract you come back to. it'll be for new contracts signed after any lockout / bargaining agreement that the terms won't be as favorable to players

Bigworm on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 1:57 PM

In the biggest news of the day, the I-264/Westport Road interchange is expected to open in 22 days. I am stoked!

Phil on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 2:16 PM

what's funny is that Cinci is now almost 100% convinced they'll get Teague too. The only team that seems resigned that he's not coming is Louisville and they are working on Hinds.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at 2:34 PM

I do remember slamball but we added the "shock factor" to it because we play on an elevated trampoline that is big enough for 3 kids. We use adults.

"Shock factor" or "Retard factor" ?

Looks like HS football in KY will be relevant this year.

UK and UofL both have some solid commits already from Kentucky.

UK
4-star OL Darrian Miller - #15 ranked OL and #93 in Scout.com Top 300
4-star TE Jon Davis - #5 ranked TE, #153 overall

UofL
4-star WR DeVante Parker - #26 ranked WR and in the Top 300 (not sure where)
3-star Demarcus Smith
Fern Creek Boys - haven't been evaluated yet but will probably all be 3/4 stars

Uncommitted from KY:
4-star Lamar Dawson - #9 MLB and in top 300
3-star Zach West

douglas on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 1:23 PM

A jersey that says Kentucky?

douglas on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 1:41 PM

nice

Phil on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 1:45 PM

The jersey is close. Nike hooked his brother up pretty well last week. His brother is pushing heavy for UK, the dad heavy for Louisville. Calipari was also offering Teague the chance to play for a program that knows how to cater to one and dones academically, not worry about defense or force Teague to play in a set offense.

Don't really blame Teague for making that choice.

douglas on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 1:49 PM

who's his brother? or should that be something i know already?

Bigworm on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:25 PM

It is amazing to me how much influence shoe companies have on the collegiate game. I guess you just have to follow the money. First players were getting paid, now they get paid in non-direct ways either by hiring a coach that was linked to the kid (that coach can provide some cash to the young man and it isn't a violation due to the relationship already being established before he was an NCAA recruit) or now the shoe company can give kick backs to his brother and in turn give it to his brother.

Phil on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:25 PM

Write up on Kanter from the Louisville site:
Enes Kanter – Now this MAN is ridiculous. He is a professional player playing with kids. He absolutely made the big men for the US team look silly in the Hoop Summit. He broke Dirk Nowitski’s scoring record at the event tallying 34 points and 15 rebounds and he did it in only 24 minutes of play!!! He is a sure fire lottery pick THIS YEAR but he will put the millions on hold to play at UK for a season for some reason. All I can say is I can see this guy putting up easily 25 and 12 a game in college as he has a man’s body, strength, skill, and aggressiveness that is not much seen on the college level. There is a reason he was considered the #1 under 19 prospect in Europe and now I know why. At 6-9 245 he is not only a load on offense but a good rebounder and defensive player.

Bigworm on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:27 PM

From my understanding, he is every bit as good at rebounding as Cousins is but not as skilled offensively. In watching the Nike Hoops Summit highlights, he understands positioning. I guess that is the difference when you play against professional men instead of boys.

Bigworm on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:27 PM

And now there is something about him being paid under the table which I don't think is legit. His dad is an MD, and second if he did take the money why not just go ahead and sign with the European teams that offered him $2-3M per year?

Phil on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:32 PM

I think he's just using Kentucky to showcase his skills in the US for a year before going pro. Doubt anything underhanded was done to get him. It'll take some magic to get him eligible, but that's why they pay Sandy Bell the big bucks.

Same situation as teague - no worries academically, school is ok with one and dones and he'll be on TV and get publicity. Smart move financially I think for him.

Bigworm on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:34 PM

There is actually a rule that should be passed by the NCAA this summer that will help out Kanter. If not, it is a similar situation to that guy for WVA.

douglas on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:35 PM

he's going to UK for exposure, i'm sure he would go to the NBA if he could but he's not 19, which you have to be on a certain date to declare. he's not skipping the NBA "to play for Kentucky for some reason", he can't go yet. he just gets a lot more publicity playing college ball than in Europe playing pro ball. he had committed to washington and then realized how stupid that was

Phil on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:35 PM

there are LOADS of rumors that Kanter was paid and not falling under the same situation as the guy for WVU. It all depends on who does the digging...

douglas on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:35 PM

technically it's not a one and done rule, it's an age limit rule that created the one and done phenomenon.

Bigworm on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:36 PM

I think they should make basketball like baseball. You can go to the NBA straight out of HS or if you go to college you stay at least 3 years.

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 11:52 AM

Philco - You don't think if UK lands:
Knight
Jones
Leslie
Lamb
Poole
Katner

That they are more talented than last year?

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 12:03 PM

I think if Cal gets both Jones and Leslie, this will be a more balanced and overall better class. Although I think some of the individual parts from last years class is more talanted.

I like the sound of this.

"Knight mentioned unsigned high school stars Josh Selby, Terrence Jones, Cory Joseph and C.J. Leslie as top 100 unsigned players he would like to bring with him to Kentucky. He will have a chance to talk to them more about Kentucky when he plays in the Jordan Brand Classic in New York Saturday night." - Larry Vaught

joe on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 10:13 PM

interesting tidbit of info...ESPN has UKs recruiting class as the 15th ranked? Why is that?

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 10:58 PM

Because ESPN is only showing 2 commits for UK. Stacey Poole and Enes Kanter. Brandon Knight has not been added to that one yet.

Scout.com has Kentucky ranked #3 with a 4.67 star average. I am puzzled how Kentucky is ranked ahead of UNC which is #4. They have 3 commits as well with a 5.0 avg ranking.

douglas on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 8:42 AM

word on stacey poole is that he has been devalued a bit b/c he committed so early. he came on strong his senior year but people didn't pay much attention b/c he had already committed. that's one reason some of these guys wait so long, for the publicity and get their rankings up. cal was as ecstatic about poole yesterday as he was about kanter

douglas on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 8:44 AM

they'll be a top 3 class after this weekend

douglas on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 8:46 AM

and with gilchrist already committed as the #1 recruit in 2011, and the leaders for 2 and 3, that year will be unreal. the #9 recruit tony wroten said yesterday he wants to follow gilchrist as well, he's a PG, and he's been trying to talk to john wall about playing for cal

Bigworm on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 9:17 AM

And just think, if there is an NBA lockout we could have Knight, Kanter, Poole, Gilchrist, on one team...with the possibilities of adding Leslie, Jones, Miller, Teague.

Unreal.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 10:48 AM

Jerome on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 2:20 PM

With all these players going through in one year, it's almost like UK is just trying to be a really kickass AAU team

Bigworm on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 2:26 PM

Well I don't even think Coach Cal knew that Orton, Bledsoe, Cousins, and Wall would all go pro after one year.

He had to know Wall would, and the others just happened to blossom together. He thought Cousins was too immature, Orton blew out his knee as a senior in HS so he figured he'd be around due to having major surgery, and nobody knew who in the hell Eric Bledsoe was at this time last year.

douglas on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 2:57 PM

the AAU line is already getting worn out, nobody thought orton and bledsoe would be gone, even bledsoe said at the beginning of the year he hoped to learn from wall this year and take over next year. he did not recruit a bunch of one and dones, and even if he did, there were a whole helluva lot of other programs trying to recruit them and become AAU teams as well. anybody would've traded their recruiting class last year for what UK had. when it's said and done, they'd probably trade for this year's as well

joe on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 12:21 PM

Doing a lunchtime post so I think this is legal. Credit card fraud sucks. Both Laura and I are making purchases in Cali the past 2 days. I was declined at Wal Mart for 280 bucks and laura at least hit up a gas station. I have no clue how this is working. If the purchases were online it would make sense but these purchases they physically were at the stores. I have my card in my pocket and it is now closed. Central bank has my debit card flagged and chase bank is worthless and they tried to sell me online banking instead of helping me with possible identity theft stuff.

Bigworm on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 1:19 PM

Yeah I prefer the flame grilled burgers, BK and DQ are both underrated to me. Good stuff.

Also, word on the street is that the Big Ten (eleven) is looking to expand to the Big 14 and will try to gobble up three teams. One of the three could potentially be ND (I am guess football too).

If this happens, the SEC will expand by adding 2 or 4 teams.

Phil on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 1:24 PM

If ND agrees to go to the big ten in football then that would probably be the end of big ten expansion

Bigworm on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 1:30 PM

Not sure. If you think about it the magic number is 16 teams with 4 power conferences.

Bigworm on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 1:35 PM

16 teams from 4 conferences = 64 teams. The 4 champions play to determine the college football champion. All this would be after the BCS contract is up though.

From Tony Barnhart of AJC.

http://blogs.ajc.com/barnhart-colle...terback-debate/

**–This week could change the face of college football—forever. By Wednesday the Big Ten’s expansion plans may be known to everybody. On Sunday Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany met in Washington, D.C., with some of his presidents who were in town for the Association of American Universities (AAU) meeting. That is an organization of 62 top academic institutions of which all 11 Big Ten schools are members. The Chicago Tribune reported Sunday that Delany would use that opportunity to discuss expansion.

On Tuesday Delany travels to the annual BCS Meetings in Phoenix where all 11 conference commissioners will gather. The Big Ten has already said publicly that it will tell the commissioners in advance if they plan to discuss joining the Big Ten with one of their members. So it is not unreasonable to suggest that if some decisions are made on the expansion front, Delany will inform his fellow commissioners this week.

Then the fun begins.

Back on April 5 we told you that among the Big Ten’s ideas on expansion is the possibility of going to 16 teams. That option is still on the table.

Buckle up boys and girls. This summer could be a bumpy ride.

Hearing Teague should announce for UofL on Thursday, at least that is the speculation. Of course, He will still be sought after by UK.

Bigworm on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 3:21 PM

I guess I should note that I am confused on this one. He should announce for UofL, everything points to that. Two people that have proven to be pretty accurate say he will go to UK, the other says he is hearing Louisville more and more.

Phil on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 3:24 PM

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Dad likes Rick because he played for him.

Cal has no business getting this kid, if UK does get him, amazing.

Phil on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:01 PM

There are things being offered to Teague that Louisville will never offer. This has almost nothing to do with UK at this point.

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:04 PM

I call bullshit.

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:05 PM

The only thing UK can offer that UofL can't offer is the exposure of being a PG in Cal's System and being "in the family".

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:06 PM

I am guessing wherever you are hearing the promises of hopes and dreams is probably the same source that said that Sandy Bell just recently discovered Eric Bledsoe falsified a test score.

Phil on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:13 PM

My bad, yeah, Teague is considering going to UK because of the facilities and tradition. He just wasn't aware of them last month, or maybe he didn't think he was good enough to play for Kentucky.

Phil on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:17 PM

I'm pretty sure Bledsoe got the 17 on the ACT all by himself. I think that rumor is pretty stupid, all things being equal.

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:18 PM

Dude I don't mean to come across like a jerk or anything, I am just saying that is the typical response and quite frankly it gets quite ridiculous hearing that crap.

Here are the two logics in the case:

1. Pitino has every connection possible with the kid. Coached father, uncle and close friend is on UofL's staff.

2. Calipari has a terrific track record with PG's. He's known for putting point guards in the NBA.

Logic #1 is for your family, logic #2 gets you paid.

Pitino has also never put a PG he recruited and coached into the first round of the NBA draft. The best one he had was Wayne Turner (#2 ranked PG in HS) and he gave Wayne a 5/10 day contract when he was with the Celtics. UK is hot right now, it is the rising brand, Cal is a great salesman for the UK brand. He is what Pitino once was..except he gives you the reigns.....Pitino would never do that.

douglas on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:20 PM

the decision lies in the fact that pitino has never put an elite PG in the NBA. His best PG was probably travis ford, anthony epps, or someone like that. edgar sosa certainly isn't lighting up the draft boards right now. couple that with the exposure he gets at UK playing with gilchrist and/or quincy miller, plus whoever stays from next year's team (kanter, knight, etc.) and it's a head vs. heart decision. i don't care how close pitino is to him, he can't lead off sportscenter every night at UL. with that said, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he went to UL, he's close with pitino and there's a lot to be said for loyalty, which i can't fault him for one bit. he'll still end up in the league after a year. it might affect his draft stock a bit, but he'll still be a lottery pick. he's good enough that it won't matter much to him personally where he goes

douglas on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:21 PM

in regards to turner, he didn't play as much under pitino, he developed and played his best ball under tubby

Phil on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:22 PM

Pitino has never had a elite PG.

The Teague family has known this for the past twenty years. Why would his opinion change in the past month?

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:26 PM

Because when you are looking at that kind of money in a year you have to make the smart decision. #1 draft pick gets about $13M over three years, 30th gets around $3M over three years.....and the rest are somewhere in between.

Now Pitino is taking jabs at Coach Cal about running off players. He notes they have put a lot of time into the 2011 class and he can only sign 2-3 this year and 4-5 next year because his program doesn't run off players to open up scholarships. Once again, Bullshit. He tried to run off Sosa, he ran off Caracter to make room for Samuels (not saying Caracter didn't deserve it), while at UK he ran off Rod Rhodes, Timberlake, Jon Edwards.

I think what is being offered is to be in LeBron's James company, pretty shady but Im okay with it.

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:27 PM

I was hoping LeBron would make Wall a partner w/o having to buy in so he could remain in college for a another year.

I think they signed Wall when he left UK

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:28 PM

Probably so, which is smart considering Wall is the most hyped player since James.

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:28 PM

LeBron and Coach Cal have a very symbiotic relationship. LeBron will get access to UK players and UK players will have access to LeBron.

Bigworm on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:32 PM

It wouldn't surprise me one way or the other whichever school Teague chooses. However, if he comes to UK he gets to play with Gilchrist who many say is the top HS player regardless of class.

douglas on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 3:47 PM

Douglas - Larry Vaught says he has one national source who is swearing it is Louisville and has a good story to go with it. He has another source that swears it is UK. Who knows?

If Pitino wins they will make it look like Pitino went head to head with Cal for the top point guard (in reality Pitino has been the leader on him for years) and honestly, Pitino could use the good pub.

On the other hand, other sources are saying Teague....and that is coming from everywhere.

Bigworm on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 8:35 AM

Douglas - you will probably like this.

When John Wall decided to attend Kentucky, the Wildcat fans knew they had something special at hand. But combined with Calipari, a few returning players and some strong newcomers, Wall was able to help coordinate a great turnaround at Kentucky.

After going 22-14 last season, the Wildcats managed to win 13 more games this year, finishing with a 35-3 mark. The turnaround was, in part, due to the play of freshman point guard John Wall. Wall averaged 17 points and six assists a game for Kentucky, leading the team in both categories. John was good enough to carry the Wildcats to the Elite Eight and now it appears he’ll be a top two pick in the NBA Draft.

While Wall is looking forward to the pros, he says he will fondly remember his time at Kentucky. “I loved every second, every moment that I had at the University of Kentucky,” Wall said on Thursday morning.

With his position in the draft very solid, it would be easy for Wall to coast for the rest of the semester, but that’s not in his plans. “I’m finishing out my school year. I didn’t come here jus to be a basketball player. I am going to finish up my degree. I’m coming back every summer,” Wall said.

Wall’s destined to be an NBA millionaire, but the degree is still important.

“I promised my dad that I was going to come back (to school) and get my degree and that’s what I’m going to do,” said Wall.

In the meantime, Wall plans to do everything in his power to make life easier for his mother who has worked hard to care for him since the passing of his father.

“I can make a better life for my mom,” he said. “I’m just worried about getting my mom a house and a car. I just want to show her how much I love her and care,” he finished.

Wall is proud of his accomplishments this season and is working out to continue to improve his draft stock, hoping to reach yet another goal. “If I get that number one pick, that’s going to be a dream come true. If I go one or two, I’m going to be happy. I want to reach my goal.”

In the end, Wildcat fans will remember Wall fondly as well.

Douglas - More John Wall.

One of the most amazing players to ever wear the Bue & White, John Wall as he announced is turning professional. This act was not unexpected but was an anatomy into Wall that was most enlightening.

* He had on the only suit he owned and it was mostly by choice because he sad he didn't like wearing suits and ties. He was sporting a pin-stripe black suit and a pasley lavenvendar tie.
* He loved the University of Kentucky and it's fans.
* He reiterated that he came to the university to be a student/athlete and will stay in school to finish the semester.
* He said all the coaches helped him out a lot - and the managers helped him to become a better player.
* Sandy Bell and DeWayne Peevy helped him be a better student athlete.
* Unlike the perception of one and done players, Wall was a dedicated student.
* The word 'WORK' as it related to basketball or academices was a constant part of his presser.
* He could be the poster-boy for the work ethic. Yes you have to have talent but he understands that success before work comes in only one place, and that's the dictionary. Lots of talented kids don't understand that that is the key to high-level success.
* He said he never thought college could be this fun for him and he thanked the fans for rooting for and supporting him. He said he hoped they would watch and root for him on whatever NBA team he went to.
- I wanted to tell him 'don't hold your breath.' The anatomy of the Kentucky fans in most quarters I find myself in continually issue disclaimers, "I don't watch the NBA." Why? 1) Because they don't play any defense. They must be thinking about the eighties-NBA when the scores were constantly in the 120's; 2) We can run a whole list of high scoring college players that went to the NBA and couldn't get a shot off; 3) The block-party the Oklahoma City Thunder held Tuesday against the LA Lakers (my team) - 15 blocked shots; 4) and the final reason is 'they wrestle to much under the basket.' They must not have watched a college game lately.
* He was so emotionally attached to his teammates that when he sets back in his room and watches video of some of the 2009-2010 games, get gets maudlin.
* He recommends to another players that comes to UK that if they get there work done in the classroom, work hard in practice, and perform on the basketball court, the fans will come out and support you.
* Wall said he got a lot out of college as a player and a student/athlete. He said he matured as a player so much that things he did on the court he couldn't do like he did in high school.
* He said that if the rules weren't in place that requires a player to go to college for one year, he would've gone to college anyway because that's what he promised his father.
* He said he still work hard 2 or 3 hours everyday just like he did since the day he hit the UK campus.
* He wants to help his mother because after his dad passed, he said she worked two of three jobs to get him to this point. He said he is not worried about money, his famlily is first.

Would you say P90x gets you in running shape or just weight loss or what?

Bigworm on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 1:35 PM

P90x is designed to build lean muscle and cut the fat.

Obviously if you want to get into running shape, you need to run.

Here is the workout schedule for P90x.

You workout 6 days per week in a row, alternating weights and cardio.

In the fat shredder phase this is the workout plan (first phase)
1. chest and back
2. plyometrics (jump training)
3. shoulders and arms
4. yoga (i do the elliptical)
5. legs and back
6. kenpo

in the second phase they switch up the workout and introduce difference moves:
1. chest, tri, shoulders
2. plyo
3. back and biceps
4. yoga
5. legs and back
6. kenpo

and on the weighlifting days you can do another workout in the morning or at night or cardio to help facilitate weight loss.

Bigworm on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 1:36 PM

The idea is to introduce change to your body continues to build muscle and not plateau

Bigworm on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 1:51 PM

Also I dont' think I am eating enough calories. I probably only eat around 2200 calories daily and according to P90x i should be forcefeeding myself around 2800 or so.

I was at the UofL and Nova baseball game a month or so ago and asked Howie Lindsey about Dieng, he told us that Dieng had already told the Coaching staff that he wanted to commit and would be a cardinal, but wanted to go ahead and take all his visits to satisfy his original plan. I've developed an opinion on this kid that says that this kid is a very smart kid (knows five different languages) and is a man of his word.
I also talked to Coleman at the Derby City night of the future stars, and Coleman also said that Dieng was UofL bound.

What I'm trying to say is that this kid is a very smart and respctful young man, and I am beyond proud to have such a young man with such a respectful personality to plat for my beloved Cardinals.

Not sure how connected SI's Peter King is but he is reporting that Missouri, Syracuse, Nebraska, Pitt, and Rutgers will join Big 10?

http://twitter.com/si_peterking

douglas on Monday, May 03, 2010 at 10:51 AM

wes, what you got on jones?

Bigworm on Monday, May 03, 2010 at 11:13 AM

I have heard back and forth.

Here is the problem, there is a person connected with the family that is trying to be really influential in his future professional career. Wants to keep him on the West Coast to remain to be a future player.

I think the news conference even surprised his mother, I haven't seen it but from what others have described is that his mother was even surprised that he picked UW. He said he made the decision because Ross dreamed of playing college ball together since they were in the 8th grade. If so, that is very admirable of the young man, and at the same time I feel sorry for him. I don't even know if he knows what he wants to do.

Bigworm on Monday, May 03, 2010 at 11:14 AM

Also from SI, three interesting scenarios when the Big 10 expands.

THE BIG ONE

Having heard Swarbrick repeatedly insist that the Irish could never join the Big Ten unless its partner, the Big East, was reduced to a smoking ruin, Delany decides to oblige them. In addition to coaxing Missouri and Nebraska to the altar, the Big Ten cherry-picks Pitt and Rutgers. With the Big East tottering on the verge of extinction, Notre Dame has no choice but to become the 16th member of the Big Ten. Fielding Yost and Jesse Harper perform simultaneous barrel rolls in their graves.

Not above shopping at a fire sale, the ACC gobbles up Cincinnati, Louisville, Syracuse and West Virginia, forming the nation's second 16-team superconference, thus meeting SEC commissioner Slive's threshold for significant paradigm shift.

His hand forced, Slive wins a bidding war with the Pac-10 for Texas, which has no interest in remaining in the suddenly second-tier Big 12. To ease the Longhorns' transition, Slive invites along Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, forcing the Big 12 to reconstitute itself with a dog's breakfast of remainders from the WAC and the Mountain West.

Bigworm on Monday, May 03, 2010 at 11:19 AM

Douglas - this is the best account of the Jones press conference I have read. It comes from a UW poster.

About 4:45pm the KJR host gets an interview with Terrance Jones (TJ). After the interview was done I said to myself "This kid did not really think about this decision and he made the decision based on what Ross wanted. Below is how the KJR interview went.

Q: TJ when did you decide to become a Husky?
A: Just as I reached my hand down and grabbed the hat?

(so a life changing decision was made in an instance)

Q: TJ why did you decide on the UW
A: It was Ross, he has wanted to play together since 8th grade

(so he based his decision on what his friend wanted)

This is a totally screwed up situation. I do believe the Kid was tired of the recruiting process and wanted to end but I am not sure he really knows himself what he wants.

In Percy's blog on the Seattle Times he said "Jones is huddled with his family in the corner of the gym and nobody is going near them"

My overall take on this is Jones will switch to Kentucky as I believe this is what his parents want. Jones will get so much more exposure at Kentucky and Calipari has a history of sending guys to the NBA after one year. Romar does not. Even Gaddy struggled his first year under Romar and TJ's parents know this.

I believe his parents are telling him that he can't make a decision based on a friend and what he wants, but he has to make the best decision for TJ. His parents will convince him that he needs to look out for what is best for TJ and his immediate future.

I was so excited when TJ announced he was coming to the UW. After the KJR interview I knew it was fools gold.

Bigworm on Monday, May 03, 2010 at 4:34 PM

Barry on Monday, May 03, 2010 at 11:42 PM

Sorry for the delay. An rfp came out to do a study on short term effects (3-4 mos) of the oil on the oyster community. These are small grants ($10, 000). My major professor wrote a proposal and I am volunteering to participate. I do not want to sign on as a tech for the project because my job will require 4 days a week of teaching which leaves me only Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to do the field work and that is simply not enough time. I am volunteering to help them on the project (should it be funded) as I do want to be a part of it. If we get this project, there is a possibility of larger funds to follow to study longer term effects. I would like to sign on as an official collaborator for that project as I will have a different job by then that may allow me more time in the field. I have also signed up with the state as a volunteer to clean up birds

Basically, the Kentucky Derby infield is a bit like every Japanese game show I've ever seen on television.

Brent on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 12:22 PM

I think when players like Orton and Samuels can get into the NBA, it just shows how NBA is watered down.

10 years ago, players like that would have never made it...I dont care about potential, its not like MLB, there isnt really a solid farm club.

Bigworm on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Brock on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 2:16 PM

The reason these players are getting in is because the NBA is really trying to push the Developmental League. Thus creating that farm system that MLB has.

Bigworm on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 2:17 PM

I am hoping that is the case, and if you go to college they make you stick around 3 years, like baseball.

joe on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 2:57 PM

Bigworm on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 3:08 PM

Yeah, but why would you go JUCO if you already had the grades to go to a major university? You are missing out on the luxuries of being a basketball player at a major university.

joe on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 3:36 PM

Bryce Harper got his GED to play JUCO to go pro quicker in baseball.

Bigworm on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 3:42 PM

Of course there are ways around the system. But if you go to college, make them stay 3 years or you can do an NFL rule of 3 years removed from college to be eligible for the draft.
